A Wolves coach and a former Birmingham City figure are in the running for the Cardiff City job.
Two coaches with links to Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are thought to be in contention for the vacant Cardiff City job, following the sacking of Erol Bulut.
John O’Shea and Shaun Derry, according to a report from Wales Online, are among the names considered for the vacancy. Derry is currently serving as a coach to the first team under Gary O’Neil at Wolves, while O’Shea was a coach at Birmingham but left the club when Wayne Rooney was removed from his post back in January.
Both of them have been first team head coaches in the past, though Derry has far more experience in such a role than O’Shea does. Derry managed both Notts County and Cambridge United to varying degrees of success – meanwhile, O’Shea sole stint as a first team manager came during his time as interim boss of the Republic of Ireland national team.
While Derry does have more experience as a manager, it should be noted that he has not taken on a head coach role since 2018 – following his departure from Cambridge, he has preferred coaching roles behind the scenes, working for both Oxford United and Crystal Palace before making the jump to Wolves in 2023.
There is speculation that O’Shea’s name could be touted due to the success of other former Manchester United players in management roles – namely Tom Cleverley and Ruud van Nistelrooy. All of these coaches played under Alex Ferguson – perhaps they picked up one or two things under the Scot’s stewardship?
Nevertheless, it has made O’Shea something of a desirable young coach – especially when his modest success during his brief spell at Ireland is taken into consideration.
Despite this, whoever takes on the Cardiff City job could have an indomitable task ahead of them – the Bluebirds are rooted to the foot of the Championship table with just five points from nine games.

Cardiff City weighing up move for Reading FC manager Ruben Selles
Reading FC manager Ruben Selles is reportedly under consideration to take over at Cardiff City, who are searching for their 12th permanent manager in 14 years following the dismissal of Erol Bulut last month.
According to a recent update from WalesOnline’s Cardiff City correspondent Glen Williams, Selles is among a number of names to have been recently discussed by the Bluebirds hierarchy ahead of a new permanent appointment, which is expected to be completed at some stage across the international break.
Ex-Leyton Orient and Watford first-team coach Omer Riza has stepped up on an interim basis, earning four points from his first three matches in charge. Riza led the side to their first league victory of the season by edging out Millwall 1-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium seven days ago, arresting a miserable run of six defeats from the opening seven matches.
Their first set of three points was followed up with a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s Severnside Derby showdown at Bristol City, where Riza came under fire from supporters for bringing on central defender Jesper Daland in place of Anwar El Ghazi and switching to a defensive five despite Cardiff dominating much of the game.
They were, of course, pegged back by a Luke McNally header with less than twenty minutes to spare and the general post-match feeling was one of missed opportunity. It is currently unclear just how much that result will harm Riza’s chances of getting the job permanently, with the 44-year-old having made no secret of his desire to assume the role.
Cardiff City managerial update emerges involving Reading FC’s Ruben Selles
The latest update reveals that Selles is under consideration to become Cardiff’s next permanent managerial hire. According to Williams’ report, Selles’ name features on a longlist of potential candidates devised by the club’s top brass, who are expected to hold another meeting in the next 24 hours.
