Tottenham Hotspur deal has reportedly been given the green light to finalize a transfer with Barcelona, but while Barca’s manager Hansi Flick has approved the move, sporting director Deco has different plans in mind, as per recent reports.
Tottenham’s summer transfer window has been a success, addressing various areas in their squad with smart acquisitions. Among the new arrivals is Archie Gray, one of England’s most promising young talents, who can play both as a central midfielder and a right-back.
Another major signing is Dominic Solanke, who arrives at Spurs after netting 19 goals in the Premier League last season. His transfer from Bournemouth cost the club a record £65 million, enabling manager Ange Postecoglou to shift Son Heung-min back to his preferred position on the left wing.
In addition, Tottenham Hotspur deal has bolstered their wide options by signing 19-year-old French winger Wilson Odobert from Burnley. Timo Werner has also returned to the club for a second loan stint, adding more depth to the squad.
The club has also managed to offload several players who were no longer in Postecoglou’s plans. Emerson Royal has moved to AC Milan, Joe Rodon has joined Leeds United, and Troy Parrott has signed a permanent deal with AZ Alkmaar. Tanguy Ndombele, who was considered a flop signing, was released, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Bryan Gil, and Alejo Veliz left on loan to Marseille, Girona, and Espanyol, respectively.
Next on the list to depart is Oliver Skipp, who is set to join Leicester City in a permanent deal worth an initial £20 million. Reports suggest that Sergio Reguilon, a forgotten left-back, could be the next to exit Tottenham.
Reguilon, who spent last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford, is in the final year of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur deal. The club is keen to offload him, and Barcelona has reportedly made initial inquiries into signing the 27-year-old. According to Sky Sports, Spurs are open to selling Reguilon, who is not part of Postecoglou’s plans.
Following this, Spanish outlet Sport reported that Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has approved the signing of Reguilon. Initially, Barca aimed to re-sign Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo, but Pep Guardiola has since confirmed that Cancelo still has a future at the Etihad, prompting Barca to explore other options.
While Flick believes Reguilon would be a quality backup for Alejandro Balde, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco is not entirely convinced. Deco reportedly prefers to sign a left-sided winger rather than a left-back, especially since Barcelona has struggled to secure their target, Nico Williams, who appears set to remain at Athletic Bilbao for another season. Persistent links to Liverpool’s Luis Diaz have also failed to materialize.
Given Barcelona’s financial constraints and the need to offload multiple players before making a new signing, Deco might eventually give in to Flick’s request to sign Reguilon. However, since Reguilon is in the final year of his contract, any transfer fees offered by Barcelona are expected to be minimal. Tottenham may have to settle for a modest sum, considering the player’s status at the club and the urgency to finalize his departure.
Meanwhile, Fenerbahce, managed by Jose Mourinho, has also shown interest in signing Reguilon as a replacement for Ferdi Kadioglu, who is reportedly on the verge of joining Brighton after agreeing on personal terms with the Premier League club.
