A big change to the summer 2025 transfer window could be coming
Hull City and the other 71 clubs across the EFL will be watching carefully over the next few weeks amid a growing suggestion Premier League clubs will vote on moving the date the transfer window closes next summer.
Managers across all leagues have voiced frustration previously about the window closing after the start of the season, including City boss Tim Walter, who felt it should be shut before the season kicked off.
Premier League clubs are proposing the summer window in 2025 shutting on Friday, August 15 ahead of the top-flight’s big kick-off, which would naturally impact the Championship, should the Tigers still be in the second-tier next term.
Previously, the EFL has worked with the Premier League to ensure symmetry across the leagues with this summer’s window closing on August 30, at 11pm, but an August 15 start date would still come a week into the EFL season, which is expected to begin the weekend before around August 9 and 10.
Sources have indicated to Hull Live that while nothing has been confirmed, both the EFL and City are keeping tabs on what happens with the Premier League, with an expectation the EFL would follow suit if that change is made.
Naturally, closing the window two weeks earlier would force clubs into doing their business much quicker and it could also have a negative impact on clubs further down the pyramid, who rely on Premier League clubs getting through the first couple of games before deciding what to do with certain players within their squads.
For their part, City did much of their business in the final weeks of the window. Having signed just Ryan Giles before the pre-season trip to Turkey in July and then Cody Drameh, Marvin Mehlem, Anthony Racioppi, Fin Burns and Liam Millar before the start of the season.
Nine of their signings arrived after August 15, with Charlie Hughes, Mason Burstow, Oscar Zambrano, Chris Bedia, Gustavo Puerta, Carl Rushworth, Kasey Palmer, Mohamed Belloumi and Abu Kamara all arriving before the window closed at 11pm on August 31, and then Steven Alzate and Joao Pedro have since joined on free transfers.
Meanwhile, the winter window will open on Wednesday, January 1 2025 and will close at 11pm on Monday, February 3 2025.
