Gary O’Neil has received a heavy amount of criticism for one substitution he made during Wolves’ 5-3 defeat to Brentford.
Little went right in Wolves’ visit to the Gtech Community Stadium. The Old Gold’s defensive fragilities were once again on show with another five goals shipped.
Multiple stars were also extremely poor, including captain Mario Lemina, with Wolves fans insisting that he needs to be dropped.
With relegation looking like a real possibility, O’Neil is under pressure to fix the abysmal run of form the club are on.
However, throughout many of the games so far this season, the Wolves manager has made plenty of strange decisions, such as one of his substitutions against Brentford.
Hwang Hee-Chan coming on for Andre labelled ‘Wolves’ worst-ever substitution’
The Wolves duo have had a contrasting start to the new campaign. Despite the poor form the Old Gold find themselves in, Andre has been seen as a highlight, with the Brazilian international showing plenty of promising signs.
In comparison, Hwang Hee-Chan has done little of note and has consistently put out weak performances.
Therefore, with the score 4-2, it seemed baffling that O’Neil took off Andre for Hwang to try and turn the tide of the game.
Not only was Andre one of Wolves’ better players but there were plenty of better options on the bench. Tommy Doyle could potentially add a different dynamic to the midfield while Goncalo Guedes has found the net multiple times already this campaign.
Inevitably, the substitution was ineffective as the score ended 5-3 to the hosts.
After the match, producer of The Wolves Report Ryan Leister took aim at the substitution calling it ‘the worst in Wolves’ history’.
He said: “Andre for Hwang is the worst substitution in the history of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“Taking off your best player for the most out-of-form player in the squad is nothing short of a footballing scandal.
“I don’t trust you anymore Gaz, but you aren’t the only problem.”
Wolves need to stop playing Hwang Hee-Chan
While stars can ‘play into form’ Wolves simply do not have this luxury at the moment with Hwang.
With the club sitting bottom and without a win, they have to bring on players who are in form or offer something different. Frankly, over recent games, Hwang has offered nothing and has often gone missing.
Stars such as Rodrigo Gomes and Guedes simply have to get more game time as they have shown plenty of times this season that they can offer something on the pitch.
While Hwang returning to form is important, getting Wolves back to winning ways must take priority.
