Brighton were linked with a move for Deportivo La Coruna’s David Mella in the summer window.
A potential transfer never went through but the winger has already shown his qualities in La Liga2, scoring twice and assisting twice in eight league appearances so far.
This is his second full season in the Deportivo first-team and the fact that he has been making a mark shows the Seagulls have again done their transfer homework.
La Voz de Galicia report Brighton made two offers to both Mella and Deportivo. They put forward the possibility of increasing his wages by a good margin, but he wasn’t tempted enough.
This isn’t the first time that Mella has turned down the possibility of having his wages increased, with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid knocked back in the past.
The Seagulls’ approach was also rejected by the player, who is now inching towads signing a new deal at Deportivo.
Several meetings have been held in this regard and that looks like a blow to Brighton’s hopes of convincing Mella in one of the next two windows.
A lot could depend on the level of buyout clause included in any new contract.

The key Tottenham problem Ange Postecoglou must now fix in the January transfer window
It’s time for the latest episode of Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham with our Spurs correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest after a crazy day in Brighton
Tottenham Hotspur went from the sublime to the ridiculous on Sunday at Brighton as they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Spurs managed to turn a 2-0 win into a 3-2 defeat in the Premier League match at the Amex Stadium as goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison were cancelled out in the second half by efforts from Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck amid mistakes aplenty at the back from the Tottenham defence.
Ange Postecoglou was furious with his Spurs players after the game and made it very clear that they did not provide the basic competitiveness required in the second half in winning their duels. He also played down suggestions that he had waited too long before making substitutions in the game.
In the latest episode of their podcast Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham, our Spurs correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest discussed Postecoglou’s comments, his late substitutions and also what they saw as a lack of leadership on the pitch as the match started to turn in Brighton’s favour, which they believe needs to be addressed in the coming transfer windows.
