South Carolina’s freshman caught flak for his unsportsmanlike conduct.
Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart wants the last word following the Rebels’ 27-3 win at South Carolina, during which officials whistled Gamecocks freshman pass rusher Dylan Stewart for unsportsmanlike conduct after a second-half sack. Trailing in the game by three touchdowns, Stewart pulled an imaginary gun on Dart and acted like he fired shots.
South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said he addressed the penalty with Stewart after the game. A Minnesota player received a flag for “simulating” a gun during the Gophers’ win over USC, a celebration that’s unfortunately becoming all too popular across college football.
Here was Dart’s reaction after the game:
“We talked all week about being the most poised and disciplined team. We were undisciplined, to say the least today,” Beamer said, via The Big Spur. “That starts with me as the head coach. You talk about multiple offsides penalty, a taunting penalty, two offensive pass interference penalties. We have to burn a timeout on that last drive on a critical third or fourth down play because we can’t get lined up the correct way.
“Really, really, really disappointing. That is completely on me. We all need to look ourselves in the mirror.”
Ole Miss moves in Top 10 of Week 7 Coaches Poll, AP Poll following college football mayhem
Ole Miss’ playoff ambitions are still intact, for now. Here’s the Week 7 Coaches Poll and AP Poll.
While Ole Miss was putting away South Carolina on Saturday, chaos erupted among college football’s top-ranked teams. As a result, the Week 7 Coaches Poll was affected significantly.
Due the Ole Miss’ 27-3 road win this weekend, the Rebels are back on the top-10 of both major polls, checking in at No. 8 in the Coaches Poll and No. 9 in the AP Poll.
At the center of all the mayhem this weekend was Vanderbilt’s 40-35 home upset of previous No. 1/2 Alabama, where Commodore fans rushed the field, tore down the goal posts and dumped them into the Cumberland River due to the euphoria.
The Crimson Tide were not the only victims of a Top 5 upset though, as Arkansas also upset No. 4 Tennessee inside Donald W. Reynolds Stadium by a final of 19-14. Top 10 Miami was just able to avoid an upset by prevailing on the road over Cal 39-38. During the early games on Saturday, Top 25 Texas A&M hosted previous Top 10 Missouri and dominated from the opening kickoff to the final whistle, winning 41-10. Defending national champion and previous Top 10 Michigan traveled to Washington and fell 27-17, and previous No. 11 USC fell on the road at Minnesota 24-17.
Elsewhere in the SEC, Georgia answered the bell following their previous heartbreak at Alabama and knocked off Auburn on the road 31-13, while Florida prevailed over in-state foe UCF 24-13 thanks to a second quarter outburst.
In Ole Miss’ South Carolina win, the Rebels finished with 425 yards of offense. Jaxson Dart completed 14 of his 27 pass attempts for 285 yards, while adding 44 yards on the ground. Juice Wells led the way in receiving with 87 yards on just three catches, while Jordan Watkins had 72 yards on five catches. Henry Parrish had 81 rushing yards on 21 attempts, including a score. JJ Pegues added two goal line rushing touchdowns.
Despite giving up 313 yards at the end of the day, the Rebels were bend-but-don’t-break defensively, as the Gamecocks finished 1-for-4 on fourth down and 5-for-16 on third down. Ole Miss had six sacks and 10 tackles for loss. TJ Dottery led the way with 13 tackles (11 solo), while Suntarine Perkins had 12 tackles. Walter Nolen and Jared Ivey each had two sacks apiece. Trey Amos also added his second interception of the season.
Ole Miss will again be on the road next Saturday, Oct. 12 for their Magnolia Bowl rivalry with the LSU Tigers. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and can be seen on ABC or listened to on the Ole Miss Radio Network.
