Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) Chairman Murdoch MacLennan is under mounting pressure after making controversial remarks about Dundee United, sparking backlash from fans, club officials, and former players.

The row began after MacLennan, speaking during a recent football business conference in Edinburgh, made comments perceived as dismissive towards Dundee United’s stature and long-term viability in the top tier of Scottish football. He reportedly questioned whether clubs like Dundee United bring enough value to the Premiership in terms of broadcasting appeal and commercial potential, remarks that were swiftly met with criticism.

“These comments are not only disrespectful but completely ignore the rich history and loyal fan base of Dundee United,” said a club spokesperson. “We expect the Chairman of the SPFL to promote inclusivity and fairness among all member clubs, not undermine them.”

Supporters’ groups also voiced their outrage. The Dundee United Supporters Foundation released a statement demanding an apology, saying MacLennan’s remarks “showed a lack of understanding of Scottish football culture and tradition.”

The backlash has extended beyond Tannadice Park. Former Scotland international and Dundee United legend Paul Sturrock criticized MacLennan during a radio interview, saying, “Clubs like Dundee United are the heart and soul of Scottish football. Dismissing them as commercially irrelevant is short-sighted and damaging.”

In response to the criticism, MacLennan issued a statement clarifying his position. “My remarks were not intended to single out Dundee United or question their legacy. I was speaking more broadly about the economic challenges faced by clubs in smaller markets. I regret any offense caused.”

Despite the attempted clarification, calls for further accountability continue. Some SPFL board members are reportedly seeking internal discussions about MacLennan’s role and whether his comments reflect the values of the league.

Political figures have also weighed in, with MSPs from the Dundee region expressing solidarity with the club. “Dundee United plays a critical role in our community and economy,” said MSP Jenny Marra. “Remarks like these diminish not only the club but the entire city.”

As the controversy unfolds, all eyes will be on the SPFL’s next steps. While MacLennan remains in his post, the fallout from his comments underscores a growing divide between the league’s leadership and its clubs—a divide that could have long-term consequences for Scottish football governance.
