The FA has confirmed a significant rule change for the upcoming FA Cup quarter-final between Preston North End and Aston Villa. Unlike other ties in this year’s competition, the fixture will not use semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), a technology that has already been introduced in the FA Cup this season. This decision comes after the technology faced criticism following a controversial incident in the Bournemouth vs. Wolves match. In that game, an offside call took an astonishing eight minutes to be confirmed, leading to widespread concerns over the system’s reliability and speed.

Despite this decision to exclude SAOT for the Preston vs. Aston Villa match, the technology has been used in previous rounds of the FA Cup, aiming to streamline and improve the accuracy of offside calls. However, following the delay in the Bournemouth-Wolves fixture, the Premier League announced it would postpone introducing the system into its own matches, citing the need to address concerns over its implementation.

Aston Villa, under the guidance of manager Unai Emery, will be hoping to continue their FA Cup journey with a win over Championship side Preston North End. The Villans, currently sitting comfortably in the Premier League, are aiming to lift the prestigious cup for the first time in more than 60 years. The team will resume their FA Cup campaign following the international break, with the quarter-final clash against Preston taking place on March 30.

Preston North End, currently 14th in the Championship, will pose a tough challenge for Villa. The Lancashire club has a rich history in the FA Cup and will be eager to cause an upset on home soil. For Aston Villa, the match represents a crucial opportunity to advance to the semi-finals, with the possibility of a Wembley appearance tantalizingly close.

The decision to exclude SAOT for this match marks a rare exception in the FA Cup’s use of technology, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the flow of the game. As Villa look to end their long wait for a cup triumph, all eyes will be on how the absence of the semi-automated technology affects the proceedings, especially in a high-stakes encounter.
